During my internship in the structural team at AECOM, I gained invaluable practical experience in civil engineering through my involvement of a new-build development project. Through hands-on tasks such as analyzing structural drawings, calculating partition loads and reviewing reinforcement designs, I deepened my understanding of how theoretical engineering principles are applied in real-world scenarios. I also observed how consultants coordinate with contractors to ensure construction follows design specifications and timelines, while addressing client requirements and government feedback. Senior engineers generously provided guidance and feedback especially on interpreting complex structural diagrams, which benefited my development as an engineering student. This experience not only enhanced my analytical and technical skills but also gave me a clearer perspective on the professional responsibilities of a structural consultant. I highly recommend this internship to any student aspiring to pursue a career in civil engineering and consultancy.
