Professor Ching Fai Ng

Professor Ching Fai Ng served as Hornell Hall’s Warden for four periods (1973-1975, 1977-1979, 1980-1981, and 1983-1986).
Professor Ng graduated from the University of Melbourne (Australia) in Chemical Engineering, earned his PhD from the University of British Columbia (Canada) and obtained a Post-doctoral Fellowship from the University of California in Santa Barbara (USA) the following year. He began teaching at HKU in 1970.
In 1985, Professor Ng joined Hong Kong Baptist University (the then Baptist College) as Head of the Chemistry Department. He was later the Dean of Science and a Chair Professor of Chemistry prior to becoming the President and Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University in 2001, posts which he relinquished in July 2010. A renowned expert in heterogeneous catalysis and membrane science and technology, Professor Ng is highly regarded by both local and international peers.
Professor Ng’s scope of service goes beyond the academic world, as he has served on numerous public committees. For example, he was a Member of the Hong Kong Affairs’ Advisor of the Government of the PRC, a Member of the Preliminary Working Committee of the Preparatory Committee for the Hong Kong SAR of the PRC, a Member of the Preparatory Committee of the Hong Kong SAR of the PRC, a Member of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong SAR Government, a Deputy to the 9th, 10th and 11th National People’s Congress (PRC), a Member of the Research Grants Council and a Council Member of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
In 2005, Professor Ng was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong SAR Government, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to higher education and public service. Professor Ng was also President of the United International College, the first full-scale cooperation in higher education between the Mainland and Hong Kong.
